HANDS ON ADVANCED TRAINING ON BOARD
The onboard practice is taking place by rotating a trainee captain who will delegate and give the orders to the rest of the crew.
Prior to disembarkation
- Familiarization with the vessel and Safety Briefing.
- Adequate time is given to the students in order to settle and get to know the vessel. (The above occur only during the first day of the course)
- Preparation for disembarkation – Checking sails, batteries, engine, fuel, fresh water etc. Students must prepare the vessel for disembarkation without the aid of the Instructor.
- Vessel’s documents. Permission to disembark from port authorities.
Checks – Exercises under way
- There must be a general safety plan in place which will mention the actions to be taken in case of emergency.
- Checking of bilge pumps, hatches and hanging ropes.
- Practice with harnesses and life jackets.
- VHF practice
Handling
- All students must rotate in Captain’s role and delegate.
- Practicing in alongside docking as well as docking with the stern.
- Close quarter maneuvering including 360 degrees turn and going astern for significant time.
- Vessel handling and maneuvering with sails only (students must understand that all maneuvers have to take place against the wind)
- Special notice must be taken when departing that no ropes are hanging from the sides of the vessel.
Chartwork & navigation
- Shoreline recognition and chart use
- Determining vessel’s position using a 3 point fix, dead reckoning and estimated position
- Cross checking position with GPS.
- Plotting our course and sailing to a well-known destination with two or more direction changes.
- Reading the chart prior to our arrival in a specific harbour. Continuous checking of the depth.
Sail trimming
- Sail adjustment from zero point
- Everyone sails in all points of sail
- Basic trimming of genoa and main sail
Man Overboard
First and most important action: Press the MOB button on GPS.
All students in rotation will take Captain’s role and reach to the MOB:
- By reducing speed to minimum
- Doing the «Williamson Turn»
- Pressing the MOB on GPS, dropping the sails and turning to the direction suggested by the GPS.
Emphasis is given to the correct communication between Captain and crew.
Seamanship
Is to be taught through the Instructor’s experience. Rope handling and rope work is emphasized.
Care for the environment
Passage planning (mandatory by SOLAS rule 34)
Things to consider:
- Appropriate clothing
- Time of departure and arrival
- Enough fuel, water and food
- Weather forecast and weather changes
- Safe heavens and harbours
- Navigational hazards
- Competent crew for the passage and the weather
- Traffic in the area
Emergency First Aid
Having some basic first aid knowledge is essential as it enables you to increase patient comfort, it gives you tools to prevent the situation from becoming worse, it creates the confidence to care and it encourages healthy and safe living.
